CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT SHOWCASE DIGS IN AT BIS http://www.constructionshows.com/construction-equipment-showcase-digs-in-at-bis/ http://www.constructionshows.com/construction-equipment-showcase-digs-in-at-bis/#comments Wed, 16 May 2012 14:52:23 +0000 ConstructionShows http://www.constructionshows.com/?p=4803 A digger painted with the Union Flag is one of several eye-catching displays taking centre stage at a new manufacturing showcase at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

Held in association with the Construction Equipment Association, ‘Constructing the Future’ is celebrating the breadth of UK construction equipment manufacturing in areas such as engineering, innovation and low carbon solutions.

Exhibits include an Ecolite mobile lighting tower from T.C.P boasting the lowest possible running costs and carbon footprint, and a leading Terex dumper truck.

Business Minister Mark Prisk toured the showcase this morning, met with business leaders and saw for himself some of the advanced construction equipment technology manufactured in the UK – standing testament to why this country remains one of the world’s leading manufacturing nations.

The Minister said:

“The construction equipment industry is one of the UK’s most dynamic sectors, and contributes £8.5 billion to our economy each year. Most people don’t realise that the UK is the second largest net exporter of construction equipment in the world. Over 75 per cent of products manufactured in the UK are exported to 150 countries world-wide. That is an impressive figure.

“This showcase is just one of the steps this Government is taking to demonstrate just how innovative and world-leading our manufacturing base is here in the UK, and change perceptions that as a country we don’t make anything anymore.

“We’ve launched the Make it in Great Britain campaign which is hunting for fresh pre-market ideas and concepts, culminating in an exhibition during the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer. So too, businesses up and down the country will be opening their factories to visitors next month as part of our See Inside Manufacturing campaign.

“Image is important, but we also need to ensure that businesses get the support they need to grow. This is why we have rolled out initiatives such as the £125 million Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative and recently re-launched the Manufacturing Advisory Service.”

Rob Oliver, Chief Executive of the CEA, said:

“We were delighted when BIS approached the CEA to stage the first ever construction equipment industry showcase at its headquarters.

“There is a growing awareness that Britain’s construction equipment sector is a major force in manufacturing and worth billions to the UK economy; this showcase is the perfect platform to shout about just how ‘great’ Britain is.

“The ‘Constructing the Future’ showcase is also all about encouraging new blood into the industry. Engineers, skilled operators – there are huge opportunities in the UK construction equipment sector which currently employs more than 55,000 people.”

‘Constructing the Future’ features exhibits from leading construction equipment names including JCB, Cat/Perkins, Nylacast, Taylor Construction Plant (T.C.P), Terex and Komatsu.

The showcase will be on display at BIS until Friday, 25 May.

bauma China 2012: Strong Chinese market http://www.constructionshows.com/bauma-china-2012-strong-chinese-market/ http://www.constructionshows.com/bauma-china-2012-strong-chinese-market/#comments Wed, 16 May 2012 13:39:50 +0000 ConstructionShows http://www.constructionshows.com/?p=4808 November 27 to 30, 2012 – that’s when bauma China, the International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Construction Vehicles and Equipment, takes place in Shanghai. Despite a slight slowing down in the pace of economic growth in China, this large country is still a veritable “hot spot” in the global construction sector. Supported by a booming domestic market, the Chinese construction machinery manufacturers are also making good ground on the international front.

Since 2010 the world’s largest domestic market in the construction sector has been in China. And, according to estimates by the German foreign trade organization, Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI), in the coming years the People’s Republic is set to further extend its lead over the second-largest internal market, the United States of America. After all, the Chinese government is again tackling gigantic infrastructure projects in its current five-year program, running from 2011 to 2015. For example, by 2015 they are planning to build 36 million social housing units, at an estimated cost of 169 billion euros.

Boosted by a burgeoning domestic market, the Chinese construction machinery manufacturers have grown strongly in recent years. According to a recent report on the global construction machinery market by the international management consultancy Oliver Wyman, the Chinese manufacturer XCMG, for example, was able to double its turnover between 2004 and 2010, while Zoomlion managed to quadruple its sales. During the same period the broad-based Sany Group succeeded in increasing its sales five-fold to around five billion US dollars. As a result, these three major firms are in the Top Ten of the global construction machinery market.

In China itself demand for construction machinery in the coming years is set to continue growing strongly. A forecast by the China Construction Machinery Association (CCMA), for example, predicts that in 2015, 100,000 cranes will be sold in the People’s Republic. That would be an increase of over 130 percent on the 43,400 units sold in 2010. High growth rates are also predicted for concrete mixing vehicles (+98%) and concrete pump vehicles (+88%). And, in contrast to the 3,019 asphalt pavers that were sold in 2010, in 2015 sales will reach around 5,000 (+66%).

So, what opportunities do Western manufacturers have in this booming construction machinery market in China? Tom Sieber, co-author of the Oliver Wyman report: “Products from Western manufacturers are best suited to the premium segment of the market in China.” Also, construction suppliers from Germany have good chances, as Corinne Abele, a representative of GTAI in Beijing, confirms: “International construction suppliers have been represented in China for many years. The growing body of legislation as regards energy-efficiency and the themes of sustainable construction and renovation and modernization are currently opening up new groups of customers for these companies.” Accordingly, demand for special-purpose machinery, energy-efficient building systems, modern domestic engineering technology and insulation materials is particularly strong.

For exhibitors at bauma China, this is an excellent background for successfully presenting their products and innovations in a market eager to invest in capital equipment.

Civil engineering to be a driving force of the Romanian construction industry http://www.constructionshows.com/civil-engineerin-driving-force-romanian-construction-industry/ http://www.constructionshows.com/civil-engineerin-driving-force-romanian-construction-industry/#comments Wed, 16 May 2012 08:34:00 +0000 ConstructionShows http://www.constructionshows.com/?p=4797 Romanian civil engineering construction has registered considerably better performance in 2011 compared to the residential and non-residential segments, which posted decreases. The reason behind this is increased capital expenditure on infrastructure projects, particularly road and railway construction.

Despite the strong economic downturn Romania experienced in 2009 and 2010, the value of civil engineering works has not decreased greatly, compared to the decreases in non-residential and residential construction. According to PMR’s latest report, entitled “Construction sector in Romania 2012 – Development forecasts for 2012-2014”, civil engineering increased by nearly 16% in 2011, reaching RON 35bn (€8.3bn).

Road construction is the leading segment of the engineering market. Romania invested considerably in the rehabilitation of existing roads and the construction of motorways in the first two years of EU accession, before pausing the following two years, faced by an uncertain economic situation. Apart from small decreases in 2009 and 2010, construction output of roads has increased consistently over the past decade, reaching an estimated RON 18.7bn (€4.4bn) in 2011, a value almost nine times that of 2002 and more than one-fifth more than in 2010. PMR analysts expect this rising trend to continue for at least 2-3 years, until 2015.

As an EU member, Romania is entitled to large amounts of cohesion funds that will be spent primarily on infrastructure, with road and railroad infrastructure accounting for the majority of investments. Within the Cohesion Fund scheme, Romania may obtain funds of up to €4.6bn to be spent on transport infrastructure from 2007 to 2013.

However, among the obstacles that motorway construction projects experienced were the unfavourable legislative framework which made both land expropriations and relationships with contractors very difficult tasks. A change in the legislation in 2009 has brought several improvements, with expropriation in particular becoming simpler and faster.

Another problem beginning to disappear with increasing competition is contractors offering very low bids to win contracts and then demonstrating that the sum is unrealistic in order to demand fund increases. To deal with or discourage such behaviour from other contractors, the Ministry of Transportation invoked contracted clauses which stipulate penalties or contract terminations for not meeting deadlines or attempting to change contract terms.

Although no motorway sections were actually finalised in 2011, the past year has brought Romania much closer to consistent completions which will take place over the following couple of years. As of the end of 2011, 434 km of motorway, totalling €4.1bn, were under construction. In 2012 about 200 km of this will be completed, mostly segments on which work began 2-3 years ago. Additionally, contractors for a further 111 km will be selected in 2012, for which the necessary financing totalling €1.1bn has already been secured.

It is very likely that road and railway construction, which account for the largest share of civil engineering construction output, will continue its growth after 2012. Many of the initiated projects are due for completion in 2013-2014 and with the new regulations construction consortia are expected to abide by the imposed completion dates.

This press release is based on information contained in the latest PMR report entitled “Construction sector in Romania 2012 − Development forecasts for 2012-2014”.

Rewriting the fuel efficiency rule book http://www.constructionshows.com/rewriting-the-fuel-efficiency-rule-book/ http://www.constructionshows.com/rewriting-the-fuel-efficiency-rule-book/#comments Mon, 14 May 2012 16:50:20 +0000 ConstructionShows http://www.constructionshows.com/?p=4792 Engineers at Volvo Construction Equipment made a pioneering breakthrough when they developed OptiShift technology – a technical advancement that delivers up to 15% improved fuel efficiency and increased performance in wheel loaders.

Fuel efficiency often tops the list of demands that customers place on their machines. That’s why Volvo Construction Equipment’s (Volvo CE) engineers are constantly developing clever innovations to make equipment more fuel efficient while reducing emissions and environmental impact – OptiShift is a prime example of this. Sven-Åke Carlsson and Björn Brattberg – the two engineers who developed the OptiShift system – were awarded the Volvo Technology Award 2012 for their outstanding technological achievement and engineering expertise.

Innovation comes to life
Volvo’s unique OptiShift technology consists of two new features – A torque converter with lock-up and free wheel stator and Volvo’s patented Reverse By Braking (RBB) function. The combination of this technology has reduced fuel consumption by up to 15% – as well as increased machine performance. “When a wheel loader carries a load over longer transport distances a lock-up function can reduce the engine revs,” explains Sven-Åke, a retired Volvo CE employee who invented the concept behind OptiShift. “When lock-up is activated it creates a direct connection between the engine and the transmission – without the aid of the torque converter. With OptiShift the lock-up function is used during a larger part of the work cycle – and that saves fuel. When the operator wishes to change direction, OptiShift senses the loader’s speed, direction and accelerator position and slows the machine by applying the service brakes automatically. This results in faster loading cycles, reduced load on the powertrain, smoother changes in direction and lower fuel consumption. All of this adds up to lower operating costs for Volvo customers and a more comfortable working environment for operators.”

OptiShift was first launched as an option on Volvo wheel loaders in 2009 and since 2011 it has been a standard feature on the larger machines – the L150G, L180G, L220G and L250G.

Revolutionary technology
“My contribution to the OptiShift concept was the idea to install the lock-up and RBB function together in one package,” says Sven-Åke, who started working for Volvo CE in 1974 in Eskilstuna, Sweden. “I came up with the idea in 1999 and it was originally based on a need to introduce a torque converter with lock-up to increase machine performance and the efficiency of the transmission.” The project began in 2001 when Sven-Åke was working as a hydrodynamic transmission designer. It involved various different engineering teams including electrical, software, mechanical and hydraulics.

By 2003 Björn, from Volvo CE’s Driveline Mechatronics and Systems Engineering team, was working on engineering the software to enable the torque converter with lock-up and free wheel stator and RBB to work together in a wheel loader. “The lock-up function isn’t new technology – it has been used in articulated haulers and trucks for a long time now,” says Björn. “But before now we haven’t been able to use lock-up in a wheel loader driving cycle. My key input in this project was the control of the lock-up function. I listened to what Sven-Åke wanted to achieve and engineered the software so the technology could be used in a driving cycle – this allows for significantly reduced fuel consumption in applications such as load and carry and transport.”

Award success

Sven-Åke and Björn were presented with the Volvo Technology Award by Olof Persson, CEO and President of the Volvo Group. “I know the passion and enthusiasm all our engineers throughout the Group have for their work and it is a great pleasure for me to be able to honor two of them for the development of OptiShift,” says Mr Persson. “In collaboration with their colleagues, the winners have made a pioneering breakthrough by applying high-quality engineering expertise. OptiShift will bring significant benefits to our customers while reducing the impact on the environment.”

“I appreciate the prize enormously and I am very proud to see that OptiShift is a success,” says Sven-Åke. “From initial idea until production, this was the longest development project I worked on. The first Volvo wheel loaders weren’t launched until the year after my retirement – but winning the award after leaving the company puts a silver lining on my days as a pensioner.” The Volvo Technology Award is the second award OptiShift has received – last year a Swedish magazine bestowed its annual Technology prize on the system.

UTICAM launches successfully in Romania http://www.constructionshows.com/uticam-launches-successfully-in-romania/ http://www.constructionshows.com/uticam-launches-successfully-in-romania/#comments Sun, 06 May 2012 15:26:03 +0000 ConstructionShows http://www.constructionshows.com/?p=4754 Announced as the largest trade fair of construction machinery and trucks in Romania UTICAM did not drop off. 40 exhibitors came to Bucharest bearing “heavy artillery”, probably attracted by the growing market, despite the crisis.

Already at the opening ceremony of the fair, State Secretary in the Ministry of Transports and infrastructure Mr. Eusebiu Manea Pistru Popa made a point by announcing that the construction market will not come to a standstill trough 2012, on the contrary. “We closed 2011 with 123km of highway inaugurated and the objective for the current year is to finalize 200km more, prioritizing on the fourth European Corridor, the one to connect the EU to the port of Constanta, with an immense economic potential” the Minister declared.

Though, what the UTICAM organizers forgot is that Romanians, and not only them, celebrate Labor Day by relaxation. May 1st was just two days after UTICAM and in Romania this day is always celebrated by a mini vacation. Many left on Friday to the mountains or the sea, so only the absolutely interested made it to UTICAM. For, if Romanians do prepare something thoroughly, that would be a vacation … Most of the exhibitors admitted this directly. Anyhow, during the past years, many feel that such fairs are just to be checked, since it is difficult to find important clients on the spot. “We have representatives in the territory, scouting clients, running direct presentations so the problem is approached differently there” says Traian Savu, Business Development Manager at Terra Romania. He admits though that UTICAM is not a fair to miss. All the important players on the construction market are here. At this first edition, one could really take a close look to the competition, on the compact area dedicated to the fair, in the parking area of Baneasa Commercial Center. Many understood to leave the too large machinery back home, as by the statement of the representative of Tractor Proiect Comert Brasov, distributor in Romania of BAUER Maschinen Group and TEREX-FUCHS from Germany. They presented the whole range of machines but exhibited only two of the most representative – BAUER BG 20H, an equipment drilling down to 53m and worth over 1 mil Euros and the handling loader TEREX – FUCHS MHL320D.

FORTUNATES OF THE FAIR
In the scenery crowded more by tradesmen than visitors our attention was drawn by the “SOLD” signs on several machines exhibited by company LiuGong. The sales manager, Lihong Li, declared that all were sold in UTICAM and he was optimistic for the coming days of the fair. We met him during the third day. We approached him, and others, with the issue of the discounts and many exhibitors declared that the customers are no longer attracted by discounts, as they were once. This does not mean that there were no discounts on the fair, just that the customers are more interested by the final costs implied by a product. The 10%, 20% or even 30% percentages less are an attractive view but they don’t necessary produce signed contracts. And this would be since the final acquisition cost is the most interesting, rather then the initial price, reduced just to stimulate a promotion. Other then that, producers too don’t have that many reserves to deduce from. They affirm the crisis took care of that already. The prices were deduced to a minimum and there is not much left to march off with in the line of discounts.

PREMIERES AT UTICAM
Trade fairs remain the ideal circumstances to launch products, study the market and the novelties of the field, as confirmed by Petre Băbiceanu, President of the Association of the Construction Machinery Distributors. UTICAM meant to “introduce to the construction market technological novelties as with 2008 up to date” and it succeeded. 500 construction machines were brought here, worth over 30 mil Euros. 80% of them are models launched in 2012 and they were premiered within a specialized event.

At the exhibition stand of Bergerat Monnoyeur, for instance, we found novelties. They are exclusive importers of Caterpillar and at UTICAM they premiered two machines – Caterpillar 950 and 323. The first is a performing frontal loader that saves fuel and has an automatic regeneration system. Moreover, it has electro hydraulic controls, joint with the chair. The latter, CAT 323 has a breaking force and lifting capacity superior to earlier similar products. Also other producers counted on novelties and brought them. However, everyone says that machinery is constantly improved, aiming to increase performance and to meet environmental requirements.
Let there be orders!

Michelin brought at the international fair UTICAM a unique solution for the Romanian construction machinery market. For the MICHELIN X-WORKS tires range, destined to the construction market, warranty offered is 6 months in case of accidental damage.

Volvo built at UTICAM an exhibition stand meant to celebrate the 5 years of presence on the Romanian market. They brought road construction machinery – pavers and compactors, multifunctional machinery, production machinery – loaders and excavators but also accessories. Half of the machinery exhibited was absolute novelty.

Mercedes Benz colored the UTICAM scenery with 5 impressive pieces of machinery and an easy commercial van – Mercedes Benz Sprinter, leader of its class, with the lowest running costs.

NTM return to PAWRS for the second time with two vehicles including a ‘plastic body’ RCV from NTM-LinkTip. http://www.constructionshows.com/ntm-return-to-pawrs/ http://www.constructionshows.com/ntm-return-to-pawrs/#comments Sat, 05 May 2012 14:51:29 +0000 ConstructionShows http://www.constructionshows.com/?p=4746 Following an excellent show in 2011 NTM will be attending the Plant and Waste Recycling Show (PAWRS) 12th – 14th June in Paignton, Devon, once again (Stand N50). Last year NTM won the PAWRS award for ‘Best Recycling Vehicle of the Year’ with its three compartment RCV. This year NTM will be showing two of its innovative recycling, refuse collection vehicles, including a Plastic Body vehicle from NTM-LinkTip.

15tonne K-2K (11.4 cubic metre split body 70/30) demo vehicle. One of the key benefits is that that the entire body, including the bar lift, is entirely NTM designed (ReigateNTM2)

The first of the vehicles on display on the NTM stand is the, 15tonne K-2K (11.4 cubic metre split body 70/30) demo vehicle. One of the key benefits is that that the entire body, including the bar lift, is entirely NTM designed. Not only does this factor make the vehicle ‘easy on the eye’, but the unseen benefits are that it is mounted on one sub-frame, giving optimum distribution of load over the chassis rails. Also, the hydraulics and electrics are fully integrated as one body unit.

The vehicle, which is mounted on a 15t DAF FALF55 chassis, has been designed to accept two fractions of waste and the unit comprises a 70/30 split rear loading body. The 30% compartment is sealed during unloading of the 70% with a uniquely designed compaction door. The tailgate is fully squared off to prevent refuse spillage.

The demo vehicle is fitted with NTM’s own bar lift at the rear, but other types of lifts can be fitted. NTM’s managing director Paul Westley said, “The vehicle has proved to be extremely popular with our current customer base and we are excited about showcasing this product at PAWRS”

A key unique feature to this NTM vehicle is the fully proportional manual over-ride control levers for the compaction mechanism. Which in effect, if for any reason a switch fails elsewhere on the vehicle, the operators can still continue with their rounds without returning to the depot for repair.

NTM compact RCV’s are incredibly popular and the preferred choice for many local authorities, not just for their impressive payload capacities, reliability and innovation but also for the vehicles ease of use – simple but highly effective. NTM can rightly claim to be the market leaders in the supply of four to 15 cubic metre refuse collection vehicles in the UK.

NTM recently acquired LinkTip, whose Polybody was launched back in 2008 at the RWM exhibition. The product has grown in popularity year on year and it is now a key part of NTM LinkTip’s business, used nationwide to collect mostly food waste by local authorities, contractors and private companies. At PAWRS this year NTM LinkTip will be showing its 7.5 tonne Plastic Polybody vehicle, which is a lightweight and heavy duty truck with an enclosed plastic body. The vehicle is equipped with a single sliding door and binlift.

The Polybody is made from tough, durable, polypropylene, which is a superior plastic with numerous qualities that include, a high heat resistance, which means that it will not be effected by the elements and is UV stable, it’s non-corrosive, extremely lightweight , non-staining and practically maintenance free. The ‘wonder’ material, which has been used to make bodies in the Fire and Rescue services for many years, also benefits from a high impact strength, and should one section be damaged, it can easily be replaced.

The plastic body can be mounted on almost any chassis. Figures based on the first model built show a massive 120% increase in available payload compared to a conventional steel body of a similar type on the same chassis. (Verdant)

The plastic body can be mounted on almost any chassis (the model on display is mounted on a Isuzu N75.190 Easyshift) and it’s also fully recyclable in that the body’s life span is approximately 14-years, so the body will outlive the vehicle on which it’s mounted, which is five to seven-years. The longevity of the body would technically allow the user to transfer it from one chassis to another!

NTM LinkTip’s Polybody trucks are 100% UK manufactured. All of the Polybodies are cut, welded and constructed by hand and then chassis mounted in the NTM LinkTip factory, based in Willenhall in the West Midlands.

Another huge plus is that the Polybody delivers a staggering improvement in payload. Figures based on the first model built show a massive 120% increase in available payload compared to a conventional steel body of a similar type on the same chassis.

For operators this obviously has a number of significant and tangible benefits. Firstly, operators will have the potential to more than double the load each vehicle can carry, meaning fewer journeys, better collection efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint.

The NTM LinkTip team will be on hand at PAWRS to talk to visitors about the advantages of NTM LinkTip manufactured vehicles and of course will be handing out their ‘special Pork-Pies’ which have become synonymous with NTM at all their UK shows!

Volvo CE breaks ground on $100 million North American investment http://www.constructionshows.com/volvo-ce-breaks-ground-on-100-million-north-american-investment/ http://www.constructionshows.com/volvo-ce-breaks-ground-on-100-million-north-american-investment/#comments Sat, 05 May 2012 14:05:51 +0000 ConstructionShows http://www.constructionshows.com/?p=4742
On May 4, Volvo Construction Equipment broke ground on the first phase of the 100 MUSD expansion of its site in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. The first phase includes construction of a new America’s headquarters office. Incorporating the latest environmental building practices, the expansion is a visible sign of the company’s commitment to the important North American market.

When complete the development will include not only a new office building and customer demonstration center but will also localize production of some of the company’s larger construction machines.

Made in the U.S.A.
Volvo CE is making a commitment to have machines built locally. The expansion will bring production of some key product lines to Shippensburg. The new series of wheel loaders (L60G, L70G and L90G) will be the first of three new machine types expected to come off the production line. Larger models of the wheel loader, excavator and articulated hauler product lines are planned in the future. The factory could eventually produce 70% of Volvo Construction Equipment machines sold in North America.

President of Sales Region Americas Göran Lindgren says it’s an exciting time for everyone involved. “This groundbreaking symbolizes Volvo CE’s commitment to North America and indeed to the whole Americas region,” says Lindgren. “The investment will increase the company’s flexibility and agility, enabling us to meet customer demands faster.”

Core values built in
The design of the new America’s Headquarters building follows in the footsteps of an on-going expansion project in the factory. The new office building will be 36,000 square feet, consisting of two floors and a ‘bridge’ that will connect the new building with existing facilities. Efforts are also being made to secure LEED certification for the office building. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification requires that buildings be designed, constructed, and operated with careful consideration for environmental impact of the health of occupants. The Shippensburg facility recently received a Silver LEED certification for the 2010 expansion of the manufacturing area.

Operations President of Volvo CE Americas Andy Knight says the Shippensburg campus will be a world class facility. “We are an industry leader in so many ways and the actual facility we work in is no different. The infrastructure investment is just one way we are living Volvo CE core values of quality, safety and environmental care.”

The new Headquarters office is expected to be ready for occupation by the beginning of 2013.

The Shippensburg facility employs over 800 people and makes over 50 different models of asphalt pavers, soil and asphalt compactors, milling machines and motor graders. This figure is set to rise to around 70 models by 2015. Volvo acquired the facility in April 2007 as part of its purchase of Ingersoll Rand’s road development division. Today it has become an important element of the worldwide Volvo Construction Equipment manufacturing footprint, spread across four continents.
